FrostWire is an open source file sharing application for Microsoft Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. It allows users to share files of any type without restrictions. The app follows the BitTorrent protocol but overcomes copyright issues over zipped files by only allowing the user to download the first fragment of the file. Other features include web search capabilities and a peer-to-peer network that encourages users not to share pirated music, movies, or TV shows. The latest version includes support for Bluetooth keyboards which enable text searches on Windows 10 devices as well as better multi-user support for Android tablets. Changes made take advantage of protocol upgrades supported by FrostWire's underlying operating system platform Manager. FrostWire has been criticized by copyright holders as a piracy tool. They have linked FrostWire to the recent court case against the operators of TPB AFK, a website that allegedly facilitates BitTorrent downloads of movie and music files as well as illegal streaming videos. In December 2013, the Federal Court of Australia ruled that TPB AFK was liable for contributory copyright infringement which can lead to maximum fines of $110,000 per day. Since then, the operators behind TPB AFK have been charged by police in the United States and United Kingdom. All versions of FrostWire allow users to download torrents and magnet links, but they can also download zipped files which contain magnet links. When downloading the file, the user is only given access to the first fragment of the file. If they want to gain access to the rest of it, they have to provide a program or key that can open that particular type of file. This approach has proven effective in preventing copyright violations while still allowing users to share files via BitTorrent. FrostWire is available in over thirty languages, including Arabic, Catalan, Dutch, German, Japanese, Korean and Portuguese. The latest version includes support for Bluetooth keyboards which enable text searches on Windows 10 devices. Users can also download the FrostWire Beta app on Android or iOS to participate in open beta testing of new features that have yet to be released with the main version of the app. FrostWire is listed as a BitTorrent Client on the Trusted Software Repositories list. The name FrostWire originally referred to frozen links or articles appearing on BitTorrent news sites reporting that files are able to be downloaded through FrostWire when they are not. FrostWire has been recognized by the Free Software Foundation for its role in combating unlawful file sharing. FrostWire was awarded a Certificate of Merit in 2010 and was listed as one of the top 10 Free Software projects at the time of receipt.FrostWire claims to be "legal" according to their terms of use and their developers state that they don't encourage users to operate outside the law and do not condone or facilitate copyright infringement.
